In part one, we talked about what anxiety is, and delved into the first in my four step approach to getting through the debilitating symptoms of a panic attack. I’m not a doctor, I’m not a therapist, I’m simply a person who has endured the gut-wrenching pain, air smothering fear, and chest stinging pressure when a full throttle hit of anxiety happens — and discovered some things that really helped me work through it.
Today, we’ll review #1, and discuss the other three.
4 Steps to Curing Anxiety or Panic Attacks
1. Identify the source of your anxiety. What’s truly at the core of your feelings?
As I shared last time, my most recent episode happened because of my identity issues. I was blindsided when I tried to avoid my true feelings. Regardless of your source, face it head on, even if it hurts, because one way or another, your body will force you to deal with your concerns.
This is where prayer and knowing Bible passages is priceless treasure. I’ve learned to immediately thank God in advance for healing me, expressing my trust in His goodness at the onset of an attack. I also pray scripture. When bad anxiety strikes, what seems to work particularly well for me is to repeat The Lord’s Prayer, Matthew 6:9-13 and Psalm 23. My brain can’t focus on worry when it’s directed at promises and hope.
3. Deal with the physcial. When a strong panic attack comes on, the human body depletes its oxygen consumption.
I’ve learned to take turns standing tall, raising my hands, then squatting down low, all while breathing very intentionally and slowly in and out. It may sound weird, but it really helps. Stretching and contracting the diaphragm while balancing intakes of carbon dioxide and oxygen quickly resets my natural body rhythms.
4. When it’s available, immediately open the Bible and start reading.
This is my number one secret weapon to overcoming anxiety. I’ve tried prescriptions and all other manner of things to reduce my anxiety, and though they offered minor relief, it was truly God’s Word that healed me. After you’ve had enough of these things, you can feel one coming on before they blossom fully. I now have Bible apps on my smart phone and tablet, ensuring I’m never without the ability to quickly open to something inspirational. Most often, whatever scripture my eyes fall on speaks directly to my root concerns, and my worries dissipate with the wind.
I may never find my birth father. Whether I do or don’t, I have a Daddy who loves me, and I’ll be okay. However, knowing this does not enable me to ignore my emotions, they demand I deal with them. When I don’t, I can reasonably expect a panic attack. When I follow these steps, I can reasonably expect relief.
Maybe someone needs to hear this today. Whatever the source of your anxiety, there is a Source for true and deep healing. His name is Jesus. Because of Him, I can get through anything, and together, we will overcome. You may or may not agree with my way of doing things, but if you struggle with ongoing anxiety, my question to you is, “What will it hurt to give Him a try?”
