Week 5: This week I’m attending the ICRS, or International Christian Retail Show, so with long days of seminars and sessions, my post will be short. But this is the perfect time to share one of my little secret tips on my makeover journey.
One Minute Intervals.
People often ask me how I have time to do all that I do. First, I guess I’m simply blessed with an energetic mind, and a fast moving body. But secondly, is my strategic personality. I’m always looking for efficient ways to get more done. And so it is with my exercise. This is where one minute intervals comes in.
I take advantage of every minute I can. When I’m brushing my teeth, I count a slow sixty and march in place. While in the shower, you guessed it, I count and march. If I watch a television program, I’ll jog for sixty seconds, then walk for sixty, then jog, then walk again. When I’m in a seminar setting, I twirl my ankles round and round while counting to sixty. Then I reverse and make those rounds for sixty.
You see it’s all about movement. It doesn’t have to look pretty, or come in the traditional form, exercise just has to get my blood pumping. And as my fitness instructor friend, Sharon Cadle, reminded me this morning, there are studies that show we get more calorie burn from short spurts of one minute intervals than from longer stints of straight walking. By mixing up speeds from walk to run, then back to walk, my body can’t figure out what I’m going to do, and as a result, it doesn’t get used to the routine and slow my metabolism. I keep my muscles guessing as to what I’ll do for the next sixty seconds.
So if you want to start an exercise routine, but don’t have the stamina or time for something structured, try my one minute intervals. Tomorrow morning, while you’re getting ready to start your day, jog in place for sixty, march, circle your arms, or skip an invisible rope. However many forms of movement you choose, simply count at least a minute and get your blood flowing. You’ll be amazed at the difference a few seconds can make.
After all, have you got anything better to do while you brush your teeth?
