It’s finally here, my turn as the older generation.
For the past couple of days, I’ve traveled with two of my young employees at a business conference. There’s something about spending time in close quarters that allows you to bond. So I’m hanging out with Haleigh and Samantha, or Hay and Sass, as they’ve now been nicknamed. And I’m learning a whole new language.
I’d never heard of the term jank until yesterday, but now I know our hotel is jank. What this means is our hotel is of, ahem, questionable quality.
One thing I do know, the language of youth has definitely changed since I passed that era. I feel out of the loop, although I’m sure there’s a more updated way to say it. However, after thirty-six hours, I’m catching up quick.
Have you noticed? The more you spend time with someone, the more you mimic their speech patterns. Which is why choosing carefully who you surround yourself with matters.
No matter what context the people in your life fill, they will influence your decisions and behaviors. At work, bosses, employees, and co-workers can alter your choices. If you want to succeed, the wise person spends time in the presence of the successful.
Do you need to improve in the areas of honesty, integrity, and wisdom? Seek out those who exemplify those qualities.
Or if you want to find out how to reach a younger generation, hang out and learn their language. Because if you assume you understand without experience, you might wake up one morning to discover you’re no longer cool, but have unknowingly become jank. If you’re unsure, check the Urban Dictionary — but be warned, some definitions come in a colorful language all their own.
Thankfully, Hay and Sass, assure me I’m not there quite yet.
How do you stay current at work? Do you weigh carefully who you allow to influence your choices? What areas in your life are jank?
1 Corinthians 12:2 (NIV)
You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.
